Wattpad Tags: Tag Ideas by Genre and How to Choose Them

Wattpad tags are one-word labels you add to a story so readers can find it in search, in recommendations and on tag Hot Lists. A story can have up to 25 tags, and they apply to the whole story, not to individual parts.

This guide covers the rules for writing tags, how tags affect where your story shows up, how to pick a set of 25, and tag ideas by genre. The rules come from Wattpad's help center as of October 2026.

At a glance

  1. A story can have up to 25 tags. Each tag is 2 to 128 characters with no spaces, hyphens or periods, so multi-word tags are run together: enemiestolovers
  2. Tags decide which searches and Hot Lists your story can appear in. Wattpad's ranking also weighs how well the tags match the story
  3. A big tag like #romance has more than a million stories; a narrow one like #paranormalromance has a few thousand. Narrow tags are where a new story can rank
  4. Use a mix: a few broad genre tags, several specific subgenre and trope tags, and a few for setting and characters

Tag rules

  • Up to 25 tags per story
  • 2 to 128 characters per tag
  • No spaces, hyphens or periods. A tag with one of these won't save, and can make the other tags disappear too. Write slowburn, not slow burn or slow-burn
  • Tags are story-wide. Every part has the same tags

To add tags: in the app, tap Create, open your story and tap Tags. On the website, click Write, open the story's Story Details and click Add a Tag.

How tags affect where your story appears

Wattpad uses tags in three places:

  • Search: readers who search a tag, or combine several (enemiestolovers + romance), see stories that have them
  • Hot Lists: each tag has a ranking. Your story's ranking page shows its best position, labeled Most Impressive Ranking
  • Home feeds: tags help place your story in readers' recommendations

Wattpad says rankings depend on a story's popularity, how fast it's growing, reader engagement, when it was last updated and how relevant its tags are. Tags that don't match the story don't help, and may count against it.

Why a smaller tag can be worth more

Only the top 1,000 stories in a tag show a ranking. Wattpad's help center gives the example of #romance, with about 1.7 million stories, against #paranormalromance, with under 1,800. A new story has almost no chance in the first and a real chance in the second.

Once a story ranks in a narrow tag, it gets seen, gains reads and starts climbing the broader tags too. So the tags that matter most early on are the specific ones that describe your story exactly.

How to choose 25 tags

Fill the 25 in layers:

Layer How many What it describes Example (an enemies-to-lovers romance in a bookshop)
Genre 2–3 The broad shelf romance, contemporaryromance, romcom
Subgenre and trope 6–10 The specific promise enemiestolovers, forcedproximity, grumpysunshine, slowburn, smalltown
Setting 2–4 Where and when bookshop, newyork, winter
Characters 3–5 Who it's about bookworm, ceo, strongfemalelead
Mood and theme 2–4 How it feels cozy, banter, grief
Format and status 1–3 How it's written firstperson, dualpov, completed

Before you add a tag, ask: would a reader who searched this tag be happy to find my story? If the trope only appears in one chapter, leave it out.

Tags in other languages. Trope tags are almost always written in English, even on stories in Spanish, German, Polish or Portuguese. Genre tags are often in both: romance and the local word for romance or love.

Tags vs. categories

Wattpad has moved to a new category system where you pick several genres and subgenres for a story instead of a single category; writers had until June 2026 to relabel their stories. Some subgenres overlap with popular tags, but categories and tags do different jobs: categories place your story on Wattpad's own shelves, while tags are free labels readers search. Fill in both.

Common tagging mistakes

  • Using all 25 on broad tags. love, romance, story, wattpad and book put you in huge lists with no chance to rank
  • Tagging what the story doesn't deliver. A reader who came for slowburn and finds a kiss in chapter one won't stay
  • Spaces and hyphens. enemies to lovers won't save. Run it together
  • Never updating tags. If the story changes direction, or you finish it, update the tags (completed helps readers who only read finished stories)

Choosing tags from your story in TypeTak

TypeTak is an AI writing editor where you write alongside an agent. It's for finding the tags your story actually earns, from what's in your chapters.

  • Tags from your own chapters. Ask the agent something like “list the tropes and settings in my first ten chapters as Wattpad tags,” and it reads the manuscript and your lore and suggests tags from what's actually there.
  • A description from the same material. Ask it to draft a description under 2,000 characters from your lore and opening chapters, with the tropes and update schedule at the end, then edit it in your own voice.

Which 25 tags go on the story is still your call.

FAQ

How many tags can you have on Wattpad?

Up to 25 per story. Each tag can be 2 to 128 characters long.

Why won't my Wattpad tags save?

Usually because a tag contains a space, hyphen or period. Remove them and run the words together, like slowburn. If the tags follow the rules and still don't save, try adding them on the website.

What are the most popular Wattpad tags?

Broad genre tags such as romance, fantasy, fanfiction, teenfiction and mystery have the most stories. Popular trope tags include enemiestolovers, slowburn, badboy, ceo and werewolf. The most popular tags are also the hardest to rank in.

Do tags help you get reads on Wattpad?

Yes. Tags decide which searches and Hot Lists your story can appear in. Specific tags that match the story help most, because a new story can reach the top 1,000 of a smaller tag.

Should Wattpad tags be in English?

Trope tags are usually in English in every language. For genre tags, use both English and your language, so readers searching either can find you.
