How Many Words Is a Novel? Word Count by Genre, Pages and Chapters
A novel is a work of fiction of at least 40,000 words, the line the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association draws between a novella and a novel. Most adult novels sold to publishers today are much longer than that, usually 70,000 to 100,000 words, and the range shifts with genre.
This guide puts the common ranges in two tables, by length category and by genre, then covers how many pages and chapters those words make, and how to turn a target length into a daily goal.
At a glance
- Anything over 40,000 words counts as a novel. A debut adult novel is safest at 80,000 to 90,000 words.
- Romance and cozy mysteries run shorter. Fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction run longer, often 90,000 to 120,000.
- Agents and editors count words, not pages. A double-spaced manuscript page holds roughly 250 to 300 words.
- Most adult novel chapters fall between 2,000 and 4,000 words.
Word count by length: from flash fiction to novel
The middle three lines are the categories SFWA uses for the Nebula Awards. They are the closest thing English-language fiction has to fixed definitions.
| Form | Words | What it usually is |
|---|---|---|
| Flash fiction | under 1,000 | One scene or one moment |
| Short story | up to 7,500 | Magazines, anthologies, contests |
| Novelette | 7,500 to 17,500 | Magazines, award categories |
| Novella | 17,500 to 40,000 | Short books, ebook singles |
| Novel | 40,000 and up | Any book-length fiction |
| Debut adult novel | 80,000 to 90,000 | The range most agents expect from a first book |
Why debut novels have a narrower range
Writer's Digest calls 80,000 to 89,999 words a "100% safe range" for literary, mainstream, romance, mystery, thriller and horror debuts. Below 70,000 can read as too short. Above 110,000 is too long for most first novels. An editor at Career Authors put it more bluntly in 2026: any manuscript over 100,000 words makes publishers nervous.
The reason is cost. A longer book costs more to print, and a debut author has no sales record to offset that risk. Established authors and books with a film deal get more leeway.
Word count by genre
These ranges come from Career Authors' 2026 update and Writer's Digest. Imprints within a genre can differ, so check the guidelines of the ones you plan to submit to.
| Genre | Typical word count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Category romance | 50,000 to 75,000 | Many imprints publish exact limits |
| Mainstream romance | 70,000 to 90,000 | |
| Cozy mystery | 60,000 to 70,000 | |
| Mystery, thriller | 80,000 to 90,000 | Espionage can run longer |
| Literary fiction | 80,000 to 100,000 | Wide range, from under 50,000 to well past 200,000 |
| Women's fiction | 75,000 to 100,000 | 80,000 to 90,000 is the sweet spot |
| Science fiction | 90,000 to 110,000 | |
| Fantasy | 90,000 to 120,000 | Worldbuilding adds length. Romantasy is often 90,000 to 100,000 |
| Historical fiction | 90,000 to 120,000 | Shorter is easier to sell today |
| Young adult | 50,000 to 80,000 | YA fantasy runs 65,000 to 90,000 |
| Middle grade | 20,000 to 55,000 | Depends on age range and subject |
| Memoir | 65,000 to 90,000 |
How many pages is a novel?
It depends on what kind of page you mean, which is why agents ask for a word count instead.
- Manuscript pages. The standard format for submissions is 12-point type, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. At that setting a page holds roughly 250 to 300 words.
- Printed pages. A book page depends on trim size, font and leading. Around 250 words a page is a common rule of thumb for a trade paperback.
| Word count | Manuscript pages (250 to 300 words) |
|---|---|
| 50,000 | about 165 to 200 |
| 80,000 | about 265 to 320 |
| 100,000 | about 335 to 400 |
So a "300-page novel" could be 75,000 words or 90,000. When a submission page asks for length, give the word count, rounded to the nearest thousand.
How long should a chapter be?
There's no rule, but adult novels mostly land between 2,000 and 4,000 words a chapter. Jericho Writers calls 2,000 to 4,000 standard and 1,000 or under too short. Some well-known averages:
| Novel | Total words | Chapters | Average chapter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1984, George Orwell | 89,000 | 24 | 3,700 |
| The Handmaid's Tale, Margaret Atwood | 96,400 | 46 | 2,100 |
| The Fault in Our Stars, John Green | 65,750 | 25 | 2,630 |
| A Game of Thrones, George R. R. Martin | 298,000 | 60 | 4,970 |
To estimate how many chapters you'll have, divide your target by the chapter length you tend to write. An 80,000-word novel with 2,500-word chapters has 32 chapters. Thrillers often use shorter chapters to keep readers turning pages. Literary fiction is more likely to go long.
Is 50,000 words a novel?
By SFWA's definition, yes, and it's the goal of November challenges like the old NaNoWriMo. For the adult market, though, 50,000 words is short. Agent Kate McKean notes that a 50,000-word manuscript is about 165 pages and probably not ready as a full-length adult novel. If you finished one in November, the draft is a strong start, and the gap to 80,000 words usually shows where the story needs more. Our guide to NaNoWriMo alternatives has a plan for the month.
Turn a target into a daily goal
Once you know your range, divide by the time you have.
- An 80,000-word novel in six months: 80,000 ÷ 182 days ≈ 440 words a day
- A 50,000-word draft in November: 50,000 ÷ 30 ≈ 1,667 words a day
- A 5,000-word contest story in two weeks: 5,000 ÷ 14 ≈ 360 words a day
Aim for the middle of the range rather than the edge. Revisions often add a scene, and cutting later is easier than padding.
Common mistakes
Describing a book in pages. "My novel is 300 pages" tells an agent little. Give the word count.
Treating the range as a quota. A tight 72,000-word thriller is better than one stretched to 85,000. Ranges tell you where a book sits, not how much to add.
Ignoring the genre you're querying. A 130,000-word debut fantasy might be fine, while a 130,000-word debut cozy mystery almost certainly isn't. Compare your draft to recent debuts in your genre, not to the genre's longest bestsellers.
Tracking your novel's word count in TypeTak
TypeTak is an AI writing editor where you write alongside an agent. Here it's for knowing at any point whether your manuscript sits inside the range you're aiming for.
- Chapter and book totals in one place. Press the count below the editor to see this page, its chapter and the whole manuscript in words. Checking a chapter against the 2,000-to-4,000 range above takes a glance.
- A finish line for the draft. Give the manuscript a goal of 80,000 words in Goals, and its card shows how close the draft is. A daily goal of 440 words gets you there in about six months.
- Lengths across several chapters. Ask the agent “How many words are chapters 1 to 5?” and it counts them together.
Which range to aim for still comes from the agents and imprints you're submitting to.
