Cultivation Realms in Order: From Qi Condensation to Ascension, and How to Design Your Own

In most cultivation novels, the realms run in this order: Qi Condensation, Foundation Establishment, Core Formation, Nascent Soul, Spirit Severing (or Deity Transformation), Void Refinement, Integration, Mahayana and Tribulation Transcendence. Each major realm is usually split into early, middle and late stages, sometimes with a peak.

This guide is for writers working on cultivation, xianxia or wuxia-inspired progression fantasy. The table comes first, with what each realm can do and how long cultivators tend to live. After that you'll find minor stages and bottlenecks, the vocabulary readers expect, and how to build your own realm system without running out of ladder halfway through the series.

At a glance

  1. The usual order: Qi Condensation → Foundation Establishment → Core Formation → Nascent Soul → Spirit Severing → Void Refinement → Integration → Mahayana → Tribulation.
  2. Names vary between stories, but higher realms almost always mean longer lives and fewer people.
  3. Bottlenecks between major realms make breakthroughs feel earned.
  4. Decide your top realm before you start, or the numbers will inflate.

Cultivation realms in order

Order Realm Other common names What cultivators can usually do Typical lifespan
1 Qi Condensation Qi Refining, Qi Gathering Draw qi into the body, use simple techniques A little longer than mortals
2 Foundation Establishment Foundation Building Lay a stable base, fly on a sword or artifact About 200 years
3 Core Formation Golden Core Condense a core in the dantian, a major leap in power About 500 years
4 Nascent Soul Origin Soul The core becomes a soul-infant that can flee if the body dies About 1,000 years
5 Spirit Severing Deity Transformation, Soul Formation Sense and touch the laws of heaven and earth Around 2,000 years
6 Void Refinement Void Tempering Begin to bend space Longer still
7 Integration Body Integration Spirit and body merge, nearly unkillable Longer still
8 Mahayana Great Ascension The peak of the mortal world Longer still
9 Tribulation Transcendence Tribulation Crossing Survive the heavenly tribulation and ascend Only if they survive

The lifespans are rough numbers that many stories reuse, and you can change them. What matters is that each realm feels clearly above the last. Many stories also put a Body Tempering stage before Qi Condensation, where the cultivator strengthens the body before working with qi.

Minor stages and bottlenecks

Minor stages

Each major realm is usually divided into smaller steps:

  • Early, middle, late: the most common split
  • Peak or perfect: the top of late stage, right before a breakthrough
  • Layers one to nine: often used in Qi Condensation

Minor stages give the hero something to gain between big breakthroughs, so a serial can show progress every few chapters.

Bottlenecks and breakthroughs

Major realms need walls between them. Common ones:

  • A rare pill or treasure is required
  • Insight is required, and hard work alone won't do it
  • A failed breakthrough injures, drops or kills the cultivator
  • High-realm breakthroughs call down a heavenly tribulation of lightning

The harder the wall, the more the breakthrough chapter pays off.

Terms readers expect

Western cultivation stories borrow vocabulary that translated web novels settled years ago. Readers know these, so it's safer to use them than to invent new ones.

Term Meaning
Qi The energy cultivators gather and refine
Dantian The place in the body where qi is stored, and where the core forms
Meridians Channels qi flows through. Blocked meridians mean slow progress
Spirit root Talent for cultivation and affinity for elements
Sect A cultivation school with outer disciples, inner disciples, elders and a sect leader
Senior, Junior Forms of address by cultivation rank or seniority
Spirit stones Currency and cultivation resource in one
Technique, manual The method a cultivator follows. A better one goes further
Heavenly tribulation Lightning sent by heaven to test high-realm breakthroughs
Dao heart A cultivator's resolve. A shaken Dao heart leads to qi deviation

Pick one spelling and capitalization and keep it, like lowercase “qi” and capital “Sect” only in sect names.

Cultivation vs. wuxia

Wuxia stays in the mortal world: martial artists, internal energy and rivalries between schools, with no ascension to immortality. Its levels tend to be simpler, like “second-rate, first-rate, peak master,” or acquired and innate realms. Cultivation, or xianxia, aims at immortality, and its realms leave the human world behind. Many Western stories blend both.

How to design your own realm system

You don't have to use the standard ladder. But settle these five things before chapter one:

  1. How many realms. Nine major realms feel complete but give readers a lot to remember. A shorter story can use three to five.
  2. The gap between realms. Can someone one realm lower ever win? Is fighting above your realm the hero's privilege or something anyone can do? That decision shapes every fight.
  3. What a breakthrough requires. Resources, insight or luck. The requirement tells the hero where to go next.
  4. Lifespans and numbers. How many people sit at each realm and how long they live shapes the politics of the whole world.
  5. What's at the top. Decide what comes after the highest realm. If you leave it open, you'll keep stacking new realms in the late chapters.

For the wider genre this belongs to, see What Is Progression Fantasy?. If your story has stat screens on top of realms, What Is LitRPG? covers how to format them.

Problems that show up in long series

  • Realm inflation. The hero climbs too fast, so new realms keep appearing and early powerhouses become nobodies.
  • Contradictions. Chapter 10 says Nascent Soul cultivators live a thousand years, chapter 200 says five hundred.
  • Inconsistent power. Two cultivators of the same realm trade a hundred blows in one fight and end it in one move in the next.
  • Drifting names. Core Formation and Golden Core both appear without saying they're the same thing.

Keeping realms and power levels straight in TypeTak

TypeTak is an AI writing editor where you write alongside an agent. In a cultivation story that runs for hundreds of chapters, use it to keep each character's realm and each realm's rules the same from start to finish.

  • Your realm chart and everyone's current realm sit in one place — the system and each character's stage live in your World, so you don't have to search old chapters to check whether an elder was Core Formation or Nascent Soul.
  • Techniques and sects invented mid-draft don't slip through — when a new technique, sect or realm appears in the manuscript, TypeTak points out that it isn't in your lore yet and files it when you click.
  • A contradiction gets flagged — Feedback checks the passage on screen against your lore. If you set Nascent Soul lifespans at a thousand years and later write five hundred, that line shows up on the Consistency card.

FAQ

What are the cultivation realms in order?

The most common order is Qi Condensation, Foundation Establishment, Core Formation, Nascent Soul, Spirit Severing, Void Refinement, Integration, Mahayana and Tribulation Transcendence. Each realm usually has early, middle and late stages.

Is Core Formation the same as Golden Core?

In most stories, yes. Core Formation is the process of condensing the core and Golden Core is the realm itself. Choose one name and use it throughout.

What comes after Nascent Soul?

Usually Spirit Severing, also called Deity Transformation or Soul Formation. Names above Nascent Soul vary more between stories than the lower realms.

What's the difference between xianxia and wuxia?

Wuxia is about martial artists in the mortal world. Xianxia is about cultivators seeking immortality, with realms that go far beyond human limits.

How many realms should my cultivation novel have?

Long serials often use eight to ten major realms. For a shorter story, three to five realms with minor stages are enough.
