Can You Use AI to Write Fanfiction?

Compiled by the TypeTak team. We make an AI writing editor, so we have a stake in this topic. That's why everything here comes from documents the platforms and rights holders published themselves, with every source linked. Current as of October 15, 2026. We'll update this page when the rules change. Before an important decision, check the original pages.

At a glance

None of the major sites where fans post fanfiction ban AI-written work outright. AO3 allows it, but notes that AI-generated works can violate its anti-spam policy. Wattpad's Content Guidelines have no rule on AI-written stories, though its Wattys 2026 contest strongly discourages generative AI. pixiv is the one site that requires a label: works made almost entirely with AI must be marked as AI-generated, and that includes novels. Before any of these, check the original creator's fan work guidelines. Some creators ban AI fan works or ask you to disclose AI use.

Site Posting AI-written work What you have to disclose Other notes
AO3 Allowed No rule. Writers use a user-made “Created Using Generative AI” tag AI-generated works can violate the anti-spam policy
Wattpad No rule No rule The Wattys 2026 contest strongly discourages generative AI
pixiv Allowed Works made almost entirely with AI must be marked “AI-generated.” Novels included AI-generated works can't be posted to pixivFANBOX or pixiv Requests
Postype (Korea) No rule No rule Its terms mention AI only for auto-translation and AI character chat

“No rule” means the site's terms and content policies have no clause about AI-written work.

AO3

In a May 2023 news post, AO3 said that nothing in its Terms of Service prohibits fanworks fully or partly generated with AI tools. It added that AI-generated works could violate its anti-spam policies, for example by posting large numbers of short works.

The same post explains AO3's stance on scraping. Since December 2022, AO3 has used code asking Common Crawl not to scrape the Archive, and the OTW's position is that users should be allowed to opt out of having their works used to train AI.

There's no disclosure rule. “Created Using Generative AI” isn't an official AO3 requirement. It's a tag writers add themselves, and it was on more than 11,000 works when we checked.

Wattpad

In Wattpad's Content Guidelines, AI comes up in one place: non-consensual AI and deepfakes, under Real Person Fiction. There's nothing on AI-written stories in general.

The entry requirements for the Wattys 2026 contest say, “We strongly discourage using generative AI for your stories.” Tools for editing, outlining, and grammar are left to the writer's discretion.

pixiv

pixiv added an “AI-generated work” setting in October 2022. It covers novels and novel series too. Works marked this way are ranked separately.

In its May 2023 terms update, pixiv made the setting required for works where almost the entire creative process was done by AI. The same update banned AI-generated works from pixivFANBOX, its paid fan support service, and pixiv Requests, its paid commission service. It also banned posts that repeatedly imitate a specific person's style.

Postype

Postype is a Korean platform where many Korean fans post fanfiction. Its terms (effective October 8, 2026) mention AI in three places: an auto-translation feature, a promise not to use translated text for AI training, and a ban on misusing its AI character chat. Nothing covers posting or labeling AI-written work.

Check the creator's guidelines first

Fanfiction borrows someone else's work, so what the original creator wants comes before any site's rules. If your canon has official fan work guidelines, check whether they say anything about AI.

In Japan, a growing number of guidelines include AI clauses. Examples we confirmed:

Canon AI clause
ENG-AGE stage productions Bans making or publishing fan works that use generative AI
Solight (VTuber group) Bans all fan works made with AI
Aogiri High School (VTuber group) Allows them, but requires a hashtag or note saying AI was used

The guidelines of Capcom, ANYCOLOR (Nijisanji), and Uma Musume had no AI clause when we checked.

If your canon has no guidelines but the creator has said publicly, on social media or elsewhere, that they don't want AI fan works, respecting that is basic fandom courtesy.

“Written by AI” vs. “edited with AI”

Even the sites with rules don't ask you to disclose every use of AI. pixiv's rule covers works where almost the entire process was done by AI, and the Wattys leave editing, outlining, and grammar tools to the writer. In practice, uses tend to fall into two groups:

  • Not covered by any rule we found: asking for ideas, looking up canon details, fixing spelling and grammar
  • Worth disclosing: AI-written sentences left in the text as they are, especially if most of the text is AI-written

If you're not sure which group your use falls into, note what you used AI for in each chapter. When it's time to decide on a label, you'll have the answer ready.

If you disclose, here's how

Even where there's no rule, saying so up front lets readers who'd rather avoid AI make their own choice. One line in your summary or author's note is enough.

  • “Some passages started as AI-written sentences that I rewrote.”
  • “I used AI to organize ideas and check grammar. I wrote the text myself.”
  • AO3: add “Created Using Generative AI” to Additional Tags

Many AO3 readers have been wary of AI since the scraping incidents. A tag sets expectations and avoids misunderstandings.

If you write with TypeTak

TypeTak is an AI writing editor where you write alongside an agent. As our fanfiction guide and What Does OOC Mean in Fanfiction? show, you can keep your character notes in your World and check finished scenes against them with Feedback. That kind of use falls on the “edited with AI” side above.

If you do take a draft from the agent, it's recorded in your History. Compare the version where the AI draft came in with your current text to see how much you've rewritten, then decide how to label it.

TypeTak helps with writing you do yourself. Whether and how to disclose AI use stays your call.

FAQ

Can I post AI-written fanfiction on AO3?

Yes. AO3 has said it doesn't prohibit fanworks generated with AI. Posting in ways that violate its anti-spam policy, like mass-posting, isn't allowed. Many readers there are wary of AI, so a tag helps.

Does Wattpad allow AI-written stories?

Wattpad's Content Guidelines have no rule on AI-written stories. Its Wattys 2026 contest strongly discourages generative AI, so check the entry requirements if you plan to enter.

Do I have to label fanfic if I only used AI for spelling and grammar?

None of the sites we checked ask you to label that. pixiv's rule covers works made almost entirely with AI, and the Wattys leave grammar tools to the writer.

Where do I find a creator's fan work guidelines?

Look on the official website for a page called something like “fan content guidelines,” “fan work policy,” or “derivative work guidelines.” Games and VTuber agencies often link it in the site footer.
