How to Write a Story on Wattpad: Chapters, Description, Cover Size and Tags (2026)
Wattpad is a free platform where writers post stories in parts, usually one chapter at a time, and readers follow along, vote and comment. You can write directly in the Wattpad app or on the website, and a story is public as soon as you publish its first part.
This guide covers what to decide before you post: what goes before chapter one, chapter length and update schedule, the description, cover, tags and categories, and the programs that pay or promote writers. The limits and rules come from Wattpad's help center as of October 2026. Screens change often, so check the help center links at the end if a button has moved.
At a glance
- To publish, a story needs at least a title and a category. The cover, description and tags are optional, but stories without them are much harder to find
- Wattpad recommends chapters around 2,000 words and 1 to 3 new chapters a week, on a schedule you tell readers about
- The description can be up to 2,000 characters and can't contain links. The default cover size is 512 × 800 pixels. A story can have up to 25 tags
- Wattpad doesn't accept Word or PDF uploads. You write in Wattpad or paste each chapter in
Before you start: app, website or somewhere else
You can write on Wattpad in three places:
- The Wattpad app (iOS, Android): tap Create, then Create New Story
- The website on a computer: click Write, then New Story
- The mobile website: not built for writing. Wattpad recommends the app on a phone
Wattpad can't import text files like Word documents or PDFs. If you draft somewhere else, you copy each chapter into a new part. Many writers draft elsewhere anyway, to keep notes and earlier versions in one place and to edit before readers see anything.
What goes before chapter one
Wattpad calls each installment a part, and you name parts yourself (“Chapter 1,” “1. The Letter,” “Prologue”). Many popular stories put a few short parts before the first chapter:
- A prologue: a short scene that sets up a question or a hook
- An author's note: who the story is for, content warnings, update schedule
- A dedication or cast list: common in fanfiction and romance
These are optional. If you add them, keep them short. A reader deciding whether to continue wants to reach the story quickly, and each part counts toward the reads you see in your stats.
How long should a Wattpad chapter be?
Wattpad's own advice is to keep chapters short, around 2,000 words, because most readers are on their phones. Its Creators team cites 2,500 words as the best length for webnovels. When we counted the first chapters of the most-read romances on Wattpad in seven languages, most fell between 1,100 and 2,500 words.
A good target is 1,500 to 2,500 words, ending on a question or a turn that makes readers open the next part. For chapter lengths in published novels, see How Many Words Is a Novel?.
How often to update
Wattpad suggests posting 1 to 3 chapters a week on a regular schedule and saying so in your description, for example “New chapters every Friday!” Readers worry about stories being abandoned, and Wattpad's Creators team says its search favors stories that update regularly.
- Build a buffer. Have three to five chapters written before you publish the first, so a busy week doesn't break the schedule
- Use the Publishing Scheduler. On the website, choose Schedule to publish later when you publish a part. You can schedule parts up to a year ahead, and readers can't see how many you've scheduled. The scheduler isn't available in the app yet
Writing your story description
The description is the first thing readers see after the cover and title. Wattpad says stories with descriptions get 100 times more reads than those without.
- Length: up to 2,000 characters. Most good descriptions use far less
- No links. Wattpad's spam filter removes the description and the title (it becomes “...”) if the description contains a direct link
- What to include: who the main character is, what they want, what's in the way, and the question the story asks. Add tropes, content warnings and the update schedule at the end
Rachel has six months to save her late aunt's bookshop. Ben has six months to tear it down. Neither of them planned on the blackout. (enemies to lovers · forced proximity · new chapters every Friday)
For a step-by-step method and a template, see How to Write a Book Blurb. A Wattpad description works the same way, with the tropes and schedule added.
Wattpad cover size
Wattpad's default cover resolution is 512 × 800 pixels, in PNG, JPG or JPEG. Wattpad compresses covers after upload, which can make solid dark colors look blotchy.
- Design at 512 × 800 or the same 16:25 ratio. Other sizes may be cropped
- Keep the title large. In lists, covers appear as small thumbnails on a phone
- Avoid fine detail and thin text that compression will blur
- Make your own or use a tool. Wattpad links to Canva and the Desygner app; on the website you can upload a file or create a cover
Tags and categories
Tags are how most readers find stories. A story can have up to 25 tags, each 2 to 128 characters, with no spaces, hyphens or periods, so multi-word tags are run together (enemiestolovers, slowburn). Tags apply to the whole story, not individual parts.
Wattpad's 2026 category system lets you choose several genres and subgenres instead of one. Wattpad removed broad categories like Young Adult, Teen, New Adult, Chick Lit, General and Random, and moved to more specific labels, with tags for anything else.
How to choose tags, and a list by genre, is in Wattpad Tags: Tag Ideas by Genre and How to Choose Them. Many of the most-used tags are trope names; see the romance tropes list for what each one promises.
Dialogue and formatting on a phone
Most Wattpad writers type on their phones, and it shows in punctuation. Phone keyboards produce straight quotes (") and hyphens (-) instead of curly quotes (“ ”) and dashes (—). Readers rarely complain, but straight and curly quotes mixed in one chapter look careless.
- Pick one style and keep it. If you paste from another app, check that the quotes match
- Italics and bold work in the Wattpad editor. Some fonts readers choose don't show italics, so don't rely on italics alone for important meaning
- Scene breaks: a centered line with
***or a symbol is common. Keep it the same throughout
Dedications
You can dedicate a published part to another Wattpad user, often a reader who has supported the story. On the website, open the published part, choose Add beside Dedicate, and enter their username. You can only dedicate to users you follow, and they get a notification. Dedications can't be added in the app at the moment.
Story Notes
Story Notes is a private page on the website where you can record your protagonist, their goal and your planned ending. Readers can't see it. It's only available on the website, in some languages, and after at least one part has been drafted or published.
Making money and getting noticed: Originals, Creators Program, Wattys
- Wattpad Originals: selected stories that readers unlock with Coins or a Premium+ subscription. In ongoing Originals, only the latest 10 parts are locked; each new part makes an older one free. Originals are chosen by Wattpad's editors and are invitation only
- Creators Program: to pitch an ongoing story to Originals, you have to be in the Creators Program. Wattpad says writers become eligible by posting at least 500 words a week and meeting its other entry requirements, and its team reaches out
- The Watty Awards (Wattys): Wattpad's annual contest. In 2026, entries ran in July, the shortlist was announced around September 15, and about 15 winners were chosen per language in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia and Filipino, and five of those per language, one per award category, won a $1,000 grand prize. Wattpad posts each year's rules on the TheWattys profile
Can you make money on Wattpad without these programs? Not directly from reads. Writers who earn from Wattpad stories mostly do so through Originals, publishing deals or adaptations that start from a popular story.
Can you use AI on Wattpad?
Wattpad's Content Guidelines have no rule on AI-assisted stories in general, though the Wattys 2026 strongly discouraged generative AI. The details, and the rules on other sites, are in Can You Use AI for Fanfiction? and Can You Use AI to Write a Book?.
Common mistakes on a first Wattpad story
- Publishing chapter one with nothing else written. A gap of weeks after chapter one loses most of the readers it found
- A description that only says “Read to find out!” Readers need the character, the problem and the trope to decide
- Tags that don't match the story. Wattpad says it considers how accurate your tags are, and readers who don't find the trope they searched for leave
- Rewriting earlier chapters instead of posting new ones. Small fixes are fine; for bigger changes, tell readers in an author's note
Writing your Wattpad chapters in TypeTak
TypeTak is an AI writing editor where you write alongside an agent. It's for having the next few chapters ready and consistent before they go up on Wattpad.
- Chapters ready to paste. Write each part as a page in your manuscript, then copy it into Wattpad. Straight quotes you type on your phone become curly quotes as you type with smart quotes, so the whole chapter matches.
- Lore you can check while you write. Characters, places and who-knows-what go into your World, so in chapter 30 you can see what you said in chapter 3 without scrolling back through Wattpad.
- Mismatches caught before readers see them. Run a chapter through Feedback before you post, and the Consistency card points out passages that conflict with the lore you've written.
When and how often you post is still up to you.
