Importing

If you've been writing somewhere else, your manuscript and lore files need to come over before you can carry on. Import uploads several files or a whole folder at once and turns the manuscript into chapters and the lore into document pages.

Say Vincent's story lives in four files: Chapter 1.txt, Chapter 2.txt, Chapter 10.txt, and Characters.docx. Upload them together, and the three chapters come in as manuscript chapters and the character notes as a document page.

Opening the Import window

The Import window opens from several places, and where you open it decides where the files go to begin with.

  • A new Space's chat: While there are no manuscript pages yet, the chat's Here's how to start has an Import button. If you open it from here, the files arrive already sorted into manuscript and documents by their names.
  • The sidebar's Manuscript tab: Import in the Create new menu. Files go to the manuscript you have selected.
  • The sidebar's Documents tab: Import in the Create new menu. Files go to Documents. Open it from Import in a folder's ⋯ and they go into that folder.

Uploading files

Drop files or folders onto the window, or press Upload files or Upload folder to pick them. Files you add later join the list.

One file becomes one page however long it is, named after the file without the extension. The four files in the example become four pages: Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 10, and Characters.

Sorting files into manuscript and documents

Once files are in, the window shows two boxes, Manuscript and Documents. Files in the manuscript box become chapters; files in the documents box become document pages.

  1. If a file landed in the wrong box, hover its row and press To documents or To manuscript, or drag the row to the other box.
  2. At the right of the manuscript box's header, choose which manuscript the files go into. Choosing Create manuscript makes a new one.

If you opened the window from a new Space's chat, files with consecutive numbers in their names are already sorted into the manuscript, and the rest into documents. In the example, Chapter 1, 2, and 10 sit in the manuscript box and Characters in the documents box.

Putting chapters in order

The manuscript box orders files by the number in their names. The example's three files appear as 1, 2, 10, and files without a number come after them. Drag a row to change the order.

Chapter numbers continue from the chosen manuscript's last chapter, in this order. In an empty manuscript, Chapter 1, 2, and 10 become chapters 01, 02, and 03.

A number in a file name doesn't become the chapter number. Change numbers after importing with Change number. (Manuscript)

Finishing the import

The button at the bottom of the window shows what will come in — in the example, Import 3 chapters · 1 document.

  1. Press the button. The files upload one at a time, and each row's progress bar fills as it goes.
  2. When everything is in, the window closes and the new chapters and pages appear in the sidebar.

Closing the window with Close doesn't stop the import. To stop it, press Stop.

Chapters imported into the manuscript count as chapters the World hasn't read yet, and show in World backlog below the chat input. Press Organize there and their characters, places, and lore go into the World. (Organize World)

Putting a file into the page you have open

  1. Press Import to page in the editor's More menu at the top and pick one file.
  2. If the page has writing, choose Overwrite current page or Import as new page. On an empty page, Import alone fills it right away.

Even if you overwrite, the earlier writing stays in History so you can bring it back. (History)

Attaching a file in the chat

The + (Attach file) in the chat input opens the same window. Pick one of the two buttons at the bottom.

  • Save to manuscript/document: Turns the files into manuscript or document pages and attaches those pages to your message.
  • Attach as reference: Attaches only the files' text to your message, without making pages.
Can I import Hangul (.hwp) or PDF files?

No. .hwp, .pdf, .doc, and .rtf files are not accepted. Save the file as .docx or .txt in the program you wrote it in, then import it.

What if one file holds several chapters?

One file becomes one chapter. To give each chapter its own page, split the file by chapter before uploading.

  • .txt, .docx, .md, and .html files (.htm works too) are accepted, up to 50MB each.
  • In a .txt file, each line becomes a paragraph and blank lines are dropped.
  • Phones have no Upload folder.
  • The at the end of a row only takes the file off the list.
  • In a window opened from a new Space's chat, a single file goes to the manuscript.
  • Files bound for documents land where you opened the window (the top of Documents or the chosen folder), and an uploaded folder's structure is recreated. Files bound for the manuscript get no folders.
  • Importing 05.txt alone into an empty manuscript makes chapter 01, titled 05.
  • Pressing Stop lets the file currently uploading finish; files already imported stay.
  • If some files couldn't be imported, the window stays open with only those files, each with its reason. Press the button again to retry just those.
  • Overwrite current page asks once more. Import as new page creates a page named after the file at the top of Documents.
  • Attach as reference attaches up to 100,000 characters per file; for a longer file, only the beginning is used.
