Manuscript

As chapters pile up, it gets hard to keep track of how far you've written and what happens where. A Manuscript groups one story or one series into numbered chapters, so it always shows them in reading order while you write, revise, and move things around.

Say you write Vincent's story as one manuscript. The part where Vincent leaves his village sits in chapter 03, and when that scene runs long, you add another page inside the same chapter.

Creating a manuscript

  1. Open the manuscript picker at the top of the Manuscript tab in the sidebar.
  2. Press Create manuscript below the list.
  3. Type a title in the empty Manuscript title field, choose a Writing Style, and press Submit.

A Space can hold several manuscripts. Pick another one in the same picker to switch to it.

Writing a series in several volumes? Give each volume a manuscript of its own.

To rename or delete a manuscript, press All on the Manuscript tab, open the ⋯ beside the manuscript's name, and choose Rename or Delete.

Seeing all your manuscripts at once

Press See all manuscripts at the bottom of the picker to open the Manuscript screen, with one card for each manuscript in the Space. Cards sit two, three, or four to a row depending on the screen width. Each card shows its chapter count and how many characters you've written so far. Set a length goal for a manuscript in Goals.

Press a card to open that manuscript's table, or drag it to change the order of your manuscripts. You can also create a new manuscript with Create new at the top of the screen.

Adding chapters and pages

  1. Press Create new on the Manuscript tab. The same menu sits in the header of the Manuscript table under All.
  2. Choose Next chapter and enter a chapter title, or leave it blank. A new chapter appears with the number after the last one.

To add one more page to the last chapter, choose Subpage in the same menu; for any other chapter, choose Add page in that chapter's ⋯. If you've written a manuscript as a file, upload it into this manuscript with Import in the same menu. (Importing)

Changing the order

To change a chapter's number, choose Change number in the ⋯ next to it. If the number you want is taken, TypeTak tells you which chapter has it now, and that the numbers in between shift by one, before you confirm.

In a chapter that holds several pages, use Change number in a page's ⋯ to change its order inside the chapter. In the same window, set Chapter number to another chapter and the page moves to the end of that chapter; pick the number after the last chapter and it splits off into a new chapter. If 03 is the last chapter, set the second page of 03 to 04 to turn it into a chapter of its own.

Moving chapters and pages

From a chapter's ⋯, move it to the Documents tab or another manuscript with Move ›, share it with Share ›, or export it as a file with Export ›. In the same menu, use Rename to change the chapter title and Delete to delete the chapter along with the pages inside.

To move a single page, use the ⋯ next to it. Use Move › Manuscript to put a page from the Documents tab into the manuscript you want, and Move › Document to move a manuscript page to the Documents tab.

Having the agent tidy up

You can ask in chat instead.

  • “Rename chapter 03 to ‘Leaving the Village’” — changes only the chapter title.
  • “Make a new manuscript for Raon's story and move the Raon note from Documents into it” — creates the manuscript and moves the page.

The agent only rearranges where pages, chapters, and folders sit. It never changes the text inside a page. With Edit permission on Ask first, the agent shows you what it will change first (Edit permission).

  • If there's no manuscript yet when you choose Next chapter, a default one is created for you.
  • Deleting a manuscript sends the pages inside it to the Archive too.
  • Writing you don't want to number belongs in Documents.
