Writing Style
The same story reads like a different book once the point of view, the rhythm of the sentences, or the handling of dialogue changes. Set that style for each manuscript as a Writing Style, and the agent works from the style assigned to the manuscript when it writes a draft, does Revision, and gives Feedback.
Say the Writing Style for Vincent's manuscript says “third person, from Vincent's point of view; paragraphs of three sentences at most; a single *** line at a scene break”. The agent writes the next chapter's draft in that style too.
A Writing Style records how the manuscript is written — point of view, sentence rhythm and paragraphing, how dialogue and description are handled, pacing, and formatting such as how a scene break is marked.
Facts about the story itself — that Vincent and Raon are brothers, say — belong in the World.
Creating a Writing Style
When you create a manuscript, assign one in the Writing Style field of the creation window. To create a new style for a manuscript you already have:
- Press Add writing style in the sidebar, or the + at the top of the Writing Style › list below.
- Enter a name. A new style is created, assigned to that manuscript, and opened for editing straight away.
Reading the style out of your own writing
Instead of writing it yourself, you can have the style read from writing you've already done. When a style is empty, the screen shows a Paste button.
- Press it and paste a passage of your writing into the field that opens. It needs at least 1,000 characters.
- Press Organize from this text.
A new conversation opens, and the agent reads the passage and offers a Writing Style card that sums up its style. How the card gets written into the style follows your Edit permission.
Switching to another style
- Press the ⋯ on a manuscript card or beside the manuscript table's title, or the ⋯ on the Writing Style row in the sidebar.
- Open Writing Style ›. The style list unfolds with a check on the style assigned now.
- Pick another style.
One style can be shared by several manuscripts, so a whole series can run on a single style.
- A manuscript has one Writing Style, and one style can be shared by several manuscripts.
- Each Writing Style has a Preset — Novel, Web novel, or None — that sets the built-in craft rules it starts from.
- Until there's any Writing Style, the agent drafts and gives feedback according to the Manuscript type you picked when creating the Space.
- If the pasted text runs over 10,000 characters, only the first 10,000 stay in the field.
- Documents can follow a Writing Style too. Pick the style to follow when you have the agent write a document, and the agent writes in that style.
FAQ
Can I use a different Writing Style for just one draft?
Yes. Name another style in this Space in your request, as in “Write the flashback in the ‘Raon first person’ style,” and only that draft uses it. The style assigned to the manuscript doesn't change. Name a style the same way when you ask for a Revision. (Outline & drafting)
