Documents

Next to the story, writing that isn't part of it piles up fast — character notes, plot ideas, research. Keep it on the Documents tab and it sits in folders with no chapter numbers to worry about, and you can lay it out as a table or a canvas when that helps.

Say you gather your notes on Vincent and Raon in a ‘Characters’ folder, and follow when it comes out that they're brothers in a Foreshadowing tracker table.

Creating a Documents page

  1. Press Create new on the Documents tab. The same menu sits in the header of the Documents table that All in the sidebar opens.
  2. Choose what to create.
    • Page: Creates an empty document page.
    • Table template: Pick Synopsis, Treatment, Length plan, Foreshadowing tracker, Weekly plan, or Basic table, and start from a page with the table already in place.
    • Canvas: Creates a page where you lay out cards and connectors freely to draw relationship maps and flowcharts. (Canvas)
    • Folder: Creates a folder to hold pages.
    • Import: Upload a file and bring it in as a document. (Importing)

Grouping pages in folders

Keep related pages together in a folder. Drag a page in or out of a folder, or take it out with Move › Top level in the ⋯ next to the page. In the Documents table under All, drag pages and folders into the order you want.

To rename or delete a folder, choose Rename or Delete in the ⋯ next to it.

Renaming, duplicating, and deleting pages

Press ⋯ next to a page to open these options — the same in the sidebar and in the tables under All, and for manuscript pages too.

  • Rename changes the page name.
  • Duplicate makes a copy named after the original with Copy at the end.
  • Move sends the page into a folder or a manuscript. From a manuscript page, Move › Document moves it to the Documents tab.
  • Delete sends the page to the Archive, where it can be restored.

Moving many pages at once

Press All in the sidebar and Documents opens as a list on one screen, one row per page, with title and date. The Manuscript works the same way. From here you scan everything, and select several pages to move, delete, or export them together.

  1. Tick the pages you want. The checkbox at the top of the table selects every row.
  2. Use Move in the bar that appears to put them into a folder or a manuscript. In the Manuscript table, it sends them back to Documents or into another manuscript.

Tick a folder and everything inside comes with it — the folders under it and their pages — so the count you act on is the count that moves.

Changing the sort order

In the Documents table under All, the sort button on a column header sorts by that column, and the beside it clears the sort. Each sidebar list keeps its own order, set in the Sidebar group of Settings > Display.

Editing a table

A table is edited right in the page — one that came with a table template, or one you put in with Add table in the editor toolbar.

  1. Click a cell. ⋯ appears above its column and to the left of its row.
  2. Use the ⋯ above the column for columns and the ⋯ left of the row for rows — add them, delete them, or make them a header.
  3. To merge or split cells, drag across several cells or right-click a cell (long-press on a phone), then choose Merge cells or Split cell — whichever applies there.
  • Deleting a folder deletes the pages inside it too. You can restore them from the Archive.
  • A manuscript page's copy is a Documents page and lands at the top of Documents.
  • A table template page is an ordinary page once created, and the agent reads its tables like the rest of the text.

FAQ

Can I put a folder inside a folder?

Yes. Press ⋯ next to a folder and choose Create new › Folder to create a new folder inside it. The same menu also creates a page, table, or canvas right inside that folder.
