Goals

Writing a little every day, or hitting a set length for each chapter, is easier to keep up when the number is in front of you. Goals lets you set how many characters to write each day and how long a chapter or manuscript should be, then shows what you wrote today below the editor.

Setting a daily character goal

  1. Open Settings > Goals.
  2. Turn on Show progress under Daily goal.
  3. Enter a number in Characters per day. If you've decided to write 2,000 characters a day, enter 2000.

To the right of the flame, the characters you typed today and your goal appear as 1,240 / 2,000. Characters typed in all your Spaces count toward it.

Setting a manuscript length goal

  1. Inside a Space, open Settings > Goals. Change goals at the bottom of Length or Written today opens it too.
  2. Turn on Show progress under Manuscript goals.
  3. Press Set up on the Character goal per manuscript row and choose a manuscript.
  4. Under Goal scope, choose This chapter or Whole manuscript.
  5. Enter a number in the Character goal field below.

If you post chapters of 5,000 characters, choose This chapter and enter 5000. A round progress indicator before the character count below the editor shows how close the current chapter is to 5,000 characters.

Set a goal for the whole manuscript, and a progress indicator also appears before the character count on its manuscript card.

Seeing your streak and what you wrote today

The flame left of the character count, in the row below the editor, shows your streak in this Space. It lights up once you, or the agent, have written on two or more days in a row.

Press the flame to open Written today. It shows today's Typed by you, From the agent, and Deleted, how much you wrote over the last 7 days, and this Space's streak. Pressing N-day streak on a Space card on Home opens the same panel.

  • Show progress starts off in both groups. Turning it off doesn't erase the goals you entered.
  • The daily goal applies across all your Spaces, and manuscript goals are set for each manuscript. The Manuscript goals group appears only inside a Space that has a manuscript.
  • Characters you typed today don't include text the agent wrote, or text that came in through pasting, find and replace, or applied Revision and Proofreading.
  • Characters are counted the same way as in Word count and character count. Phone screens don't have the row below the editor, so goals don't show there.
