Formatting
The same sentence reads differently depending on its font and how the lines sit. Formatting lets you set the look of a page from the toolbar — fonts, sizes, colors, alignment, lists, and tables — and tidies up quotes, dialogue dashes, and ellipses as you type.
Styling text
Open Font in the toolbar and the fonts are grouped as Korean fonts, Latin fonts, Japanese fonts, and Traditional Chinese fonts, in that order. Press a font to apply it to the selected text only. Set the size with Font size. For words you want to stand out, use Bold, Italic, Underline, or Strikethrough.
Text without a font applied shows in the Editor font. To change it, hover over the font you want and press Set as editor font at the end of its row. The editor font is saved to your account, so it looks the same in any browser. Fonts for chat and screen titles are set in Customization.
Line up a paragraph with Left align, Center align, Right align, or Justify under Text alignment, and start a Bulleted list or a Numbered list under List.
Step back through your edits with Undo, or forward again with Redo.
Inserting a table
- Put the cursor where the table should go.
- Press Add table in the toolbar.
- Pick the number of columns and rows, and the table goes in at the cursor.
You edit a table right on the page. See Documents for how.
Coloring text and highlights
- Open Text color or Highlight in the toolbar.
- Pick a color. The colors already used on this page show up too, so you can pick the same one again right away.
To remove a color, pick the first swatch, the one with a slash through it.
Save colors you'll use on other pages with Add color under My colors.
Formatting as you type
Set each of these four under Auto-formatting in Settings > Editor.
- Auto-convert quotes: Straight quotes (" ') become the quote style you chose. Auto follows the display language, so an English screen gets “…” ‘…’.
- Auto-convert dialogue dashes: Type “- ” at the start of a manuscript paragraph and it becomes the dialogue dash you chose.
- Auto-convert ellipses: Three periods in a row (“...”) become a single ellipsis character (“…”).
- Auto-format Markdown syntax: At the start of a line, “-” starts a bulleted list, “1.” a numbered list, “#” a heading, and “>” a quote. “**text**” turns bold.
- The quote style you chose also applies to pasted text, imported files, and drafts the agent writes. It doesn't apply to Guidance or the World Organizing Rules.
- Changing the quote style also converts the straight quotes on the open page.
- With Auto-convert dialogue dashes on Auto, nothing changes on screens in languages that mark dialogue with quotation marks, such as English or Korean.
- Exported PDF and EPUB text and pages you share also show in your editor font.
- The contrast of the text and highlight colors you pick is adjusted to the theme as you switch between light and dark. Turn this on or off with Text and highlight contrast against the theme color under Color adjustment in Settings > Editor.
FAQ
Can I change the spacing between paragraphs?
Yes. In the editor's More menu, set the number of line breaks between paragraphs from 1 to 10 under Adjust paragraph spacing, and every paragraph on the page is spaced that way. Details are in Editor utilities.
